NASA, ESA will examine how artificial gravity can keep astronauts healthy

Scientists can adjust the intensity of the centrifugal force and decide whether they should rotate around a person's head or chest, but it's not clear what will work. This is partly what the experiment is – they will better understand what the gravitational effects would be to prevent muscle weakening.

Regardless of the conclusions you probably will not see 2001-still spins habitats anytime soon. You will probably see something that is due to studies like this one. If mankind will go on trips to Mars or send more than a handful of people to orbit for longer periods, it will probably want some sort of simulated weight to preserve the ability of future space travelers.
