Test drive Honda HR-V: let's not the "leader", but the "player"

In one of the most popular classes "compact crossover" an important and long-awaited replenishment is the Honda HR-V. Similar cars fall into the most "apple" of the modern automobile market in Ukraine (and in the world), which means they will certainly find buyers. But this does not necessarily make them "a car superstar." And that's why …

Positioning

Crossover Honda HR-V first appeared in 1998, actually becoming one of the B-SUV's discoverers, which today is mega-popular: 1.6-liter motors, a 3- or 5-door body length of 4.11 m (for 5- door version). Today we will talk about the model of the second generation, which debuted in 2013 initially under the name Vezel for the Japanese market. Then the car went to the US market and to Europe – already with the usual name HR-V. In the second generation, the model is only offered with a 5-door body and has become a bit larger – a length of 4.33 m: in fact, the car has already crossed the class B-SUV, taking the first step towards the C-SUV. The crossover Honda HR-V recently passed a planned update: the novelty is recognized on the wide chrome plated between the headlights and the new front bumper – just such a version and started with sales in Ukraine.

History Honda HRV has two generations of models, the predecessor was quite popular with us. The second-generation car came to Ukraine immediately with the latest refinements, a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a front-drive (for the European markets only the front-wheel drive), an "automatic" in the form CVT-watcher. The two options are offered, the test car is the maximum version Elegance.

How is it going?

It seems well acceptable, but there are too many "but" here. For example, the engine and variator provide smoothness and softness in the ride – lightly pressed on the accelerator, gently pushed, you are not in a hurry. Ba-bah! What was that? It was a pendant that seemed like without a blunt blow, but all the same it felt and noticeably worked the next hole or hillock, that our spring roads were so lavishly buried. It is a pity that on large unevenness the suspension behaves quite tolerably (rather, not "hard", but "elastic"), but here the average and shallow pit pitches are constantly unpleasantly delivered to the salon.

Could the Honda HR-V model with such a rigid elastic suspension be designed for a "drive"? The lever of the variator in the "S" mode, the gas pressed the cut, the motor spun up to high revs. But there is no overwhelming dynamics, as for the promised "horses" 130: there is still "atmospheric", not "turbo". But the roar of the engine already exists: the sound of the engine's work comes to the salon at 3-3.5 thousand. rpm, by 4-4,5 thousand he also becomes anxious at all. About to unfasten the motor to 6-6,5 thousand rpm, where there is a peak of power, there is no speech. Moreover, when overclocking "in the floor", the variator simply entangles the rotation of the motors to the zone of high revs (5-5.5 rpm), especially not trying to simulate switching to change the engine's pitch. As a result, as far as riding habits are concerned, I only boast a steering wheel: to the extent sharp and with pleasant, but not excessive, weight in the turns.

Externally Honda HRV looks cool and even dynamic: a "5-door cross-coupe" with a sloping lid and a hand-held handle. Last updates brought a wide chrome strip – the car began to look more expensive. In Europe, the maximum version of the Executive also receives LED lights, but only versions are available in Ukraine Comfort and Elegance – and hence only halogen and lenses, LEDs are present only in daytime running lights. But the main remark, in my opinion, is the general failure of the running qualities: for a leisurely eco-ride the suspension seems to be rigid, and for a dynamic drive there is not enough power of the engine and S-the mode of the variator does not save the situation. Except extra SThe variator mode also provides the possibility of manual selection of "gear" (fixed variator positions) and eco mode of operation of the motor, all additional settings can be combined in an arbitrary order.

However, the Honda HR-V crossover can be replayed by the salon. First, as well as appearance, the front part looks attractive and bold, while it manages to avoid excessive extravagance: neat lines and harmonious shapes, a little soft plastic and gloss finish, a 2-storey central console. The car is memorized by a panel of devices where the multi-colored rim of the speedometer and the ECON button help save fuel: if the ring is green, it means that you will eat the most economically. The ventilation system also attracts attention. The touch control unit is beautiful and generally convenient, but takes the same place as the pushbutton, it only collects fingerprints more strongly. But another solution – a developed 3-section deflector for the passenger – I welcome: it gives more possibilities of adjusting the airflow.

Secondly, the Honda HR-V model is unconditionally good behind. Everything starts with legroom: by this parameter, the car is perhaps one of the leaders of the class and can easily compete with more overall models. The next step is a unique Magic Seats system for folding rear seats: they can be raised upwards (to carry large things in the cabin) or lower down in the traditional way (to carry large things in the trunk), and when lowering the seat they fall very low. Plus nice bonuses in the form of adjusting the angle of the back and armrest. For the maximum evaluation, only the heats in the second row of seats and the wider opening angle of the doors are not enough.

The front part of the salon looks quite modern, pleases with a concise design and a couple of interesting solutions: a 2-storey central console, a touch-block of the "climate", a 3-section air deflector of the passenger, a sliding armrest with cupholders. At the center of a huge speedometer, the display instead of the black mark is obviously requested, but the multi-colored ring rim is an interesting and useful find.

Backward spacious and comfortable. Separate "counting" of the folding system of the seat: they can be raised or folded into the level with the floor. And the trunk is good: it is initially large, plus a huge niche in the underground.

Are there innovations?

The Honda HR-V crossover is built on the compact model Honda Jazz / Fit and generally offers a familiar design: the bodywork, front-wheel drive, an independent front MacFeron suspension, a semi-dependent rear suspension based on a torsion beam. But there is a feature: the fuel tank (50 liters) is installed under the front chairs, which allowed to spot in the back row of seats and install the system Ā«Magic SeatsĀ». Under the hood, a 1.5-liter petrol engine is installed. Earth Dreams: direct injection of fuel, compression ratio 11.5: 1, i-VTEC, i-VTEC, Idle Stop. As a "machine", a wedge-shaped CVT variator is used.

However, a number of innovations for Honda in Ukraine still bring the car. It is a complex of functions and systems for security. Here is also the control of the rhythm of movement, and the recognition of road signs, and the emergency braking function, and the system of automatic switching of the light "near / far". The whole complex is tied to one block of sensors / sensors, which is located in the upper part of the windshield: a monocular camera and a laser rangefinder-radar (lidar). Of course, there are a number of remarks. For example, the control of the rarity only monitors the road and warns of the departure from its strip, but independently the car does not equal. The system of active braking in the city operates at a speed of 5-32 km / h (for a higher speed an adaptive cruise radar is needed). On the other hand, there are also pluses: the camera is flashing to markup and signs of speed limitations, noting them even at high informational boards.

The construction of the car is familiar: a bearing body, a front-wheel drive, an atmospheric 1.5-liter engine, an "automatic" -variator. But the crossover Honda HRV introduces many auxiliary systems for the safety and comfort of the driver: the control of the rarity LDW, auto-switch light headlights HSS, emergency braking in the city CBAS, recognition of road signs TSR. Everything is tied to the camera and the lidar in the upper part of the windshield. Among other techno-devices are the 3-mode rearview camera and the central touch screen, which allows you to customize application icons on the desktop, like a smartphone or tablet.

Prices and competitors

As already noted above, the Honda HR-V crossover comes to us in only one version of the engine (engine / transmission), but you can choose the Comfort or Elegance kit.

Minimum version Honda HRV in complete Comfort is estimated at $ 24.1 thousand. It seems a lot, but it's also quite good: six airbags (including "curtains"), stabilization system, emergency braking function in the city, cruise control, electric drive of glasses and mirrors, folding rear seats "Magic Seats", audio system with control on steering wheel, 16-inch light-alloy wheels. The next version – Honda HRV Elegance for $ 28.1 thousand, which additionally offers: the above set of driver assistance systems, signaling, 2-zone "climate", heated front seats, leather steering wheel, rain sensor, rear view camera, parking sensors, Garmin navigation, Honda Connect multimedia support with Android Auto, rear armrest, fog lights, tinted rear windows, However, even the maximum version lacks "bright spots" in equipment: projection display, adaptive cruise, premium audio, LED headlights, leather interior, circular view – there is nothing in this list.

The crossover Honda HR-V turns out to be at the very top of the class of the B-SUV, and, taking into account its price, even enters the territory of the C-SUV in the initial versions. Thus, among the most popular compact crossovers of Japanese brands, the following models can be recalled: Mazda CX-3 (close, but good ride), Toyota CH-R (comfortable and economical), Suzuki Vitara (a wide choice of versions, full drive, inexpensive "base" ). Europeans add to this list Citroen C3 Aircross and Renault Captur – both models make a bid for originality and offer diesels. But there are still Nissan Juke and FIAT 500X: let the elderly and narrower in the cabin, but relatively not expensive. Of the larger models I must mention Nissan Qashqai, KIA Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Kuga, Renault Kadjar (I will soon tell you about the updated version): each of these cars is comparable to the Honda HR-V, plus a plus-minus for the price, there are options with full drive and diesel engines …

To admit Honda HRV it turns out in a difficult situation – many dangerous competitors and few cardinal advantages: there is no economical diesel or hybrid, no complete drive, no cheap "base", no powerful motor and sports version. The main plus Honda HRV – a spacious interior with excellent transformation and a large boot.

Cost of maintenance

When driving in the city, the car consumed 8-8.5 liters of fuel per 100 km of average mileage. With dynamic start-ups and traffic jams, fuel consumption did not increase significantly, barely reaching 9-9.5 liters per 100 km, but with a smooth ride style and no traffic jams, the consumption can be reduced to about 7 liters per 100 km of track. On the track at a speed of 80-90 km / h, the car consumes about 4.5 liters per 100 km, at a speed of 110-120 km / h, 6 liters per 100 km of track are satisfied. And let the Honda HR-V does not reach the hybrid or diesel consumption figures (which can be bought for comparable money), but among the competitors with petrol 110-130-strong engines and "automatic machines" is one of the most economical for its class.

The total guarantee for the car is three years or 100 thousand. km of mileage. Periodicity of TO – once in 15 000 th. km or once a year. Standard minimum TO will cost 2.4 thousand UAH. UAH., the more extensive TO (TO-90) will require 7,9 thousand. UAH. Prices for the car and TO are indicated as of March, excluding additional discounts and stocks when buying a car or its service.

Security

The car passed the standard Euro NCAP test cycle and earned a maximum "5-star" rating. Especially I will note a good comprehensive level of protection without obvious failures: dangerous orange zones are fixed only for the front passenger's frontal front impact with a 100% overlap and for the rear passenger's neck when hitting the rear. In the rest – completely green and yellow zones: in any other types of impacts and for any other parts of the body of the driver / passengers.

As a result

Honda is able to make comfortable cars – proven by Civic 4D and Pilot. Honda is able to make cars that give hope to an interesting drive – proves Civic Sport. Honda can do well and good cars – proven CR-V. However, on this background, the crossover Honda HR-V does not inscribe its page in the modern history of Honda in Ukraine: offering a well thought out and comfortable interior, the car misses the job of the motor and its performance. Plus (more precisely minus) there are not enough features – hybrid or diesel, full drive, innovative equipment – to compensate for the high price.

However, in today's automotive market of Ukraine, the start of sales of an absolutely new model is already the win of the importer and dealers. Because now you do not need to "lick" abroad, and you can go to the salon and buy a car: maybe someone dreamed of such a design or requires a comfortable interior with compact dimensions. In the end, let the leader of the Honda HR-V crossover do not pretend, but the role of the "player of the segment" will go.

Pros:

+ Space behind, folding seats, large boot – practicality is good

+ Original appearance and interior: the eyes do not cut, while it looks "fresh"

Cons:

– The engine lacks dynamics for "sports", the suspension lacks softness for "comfort"

– Small choice: no 4×4, no cheap "base", no diesel / hybrid, no sports version …
