- Switzerland imports more pieces of bread and dough.
- In the last ten years, imports have almost tripled.
- This is reported to the NZZ on a Sunday, which refers to customs data.
Bread in the last decade in the store did not become more expensive or cheaper. But: bread at the Swiss breakfast table is increasingly being produced overseas and then imported.
Since high prices cause imports of wheat to be financially unattractive, retailers buy bread overseas. For example, with Aldi and Lidl sellers, every third bread is nesting abroad – and baked in shops with Swiss air.
However, in the last ten years, imports of bread did not noticeably increase, but imports of biscuits, pies and prepared pizzas increased by at least 80%, as shown by the customs administration figures.
The family and businesses must close it
This would also affect bakeries that could not reduce prices with Swiss labor costs, writes "NZZ am Sonntag". Therefore, about 40 family bakeries and businesses are closed every year in Switzerland, according to the Swiss bakery and confectionary associations.
