A competitor for Microsoft’s Chrome OS will be out next year

The company is working to complete the Windows 10X platform.

Information about the upcoming Microsoft Windows 10X operating system has been appearing regularly for several months. According to the latest reports from the Microsoft environment, which were pointed out by the website, the original plans are still valid.

According to them, Microsoft could complete its platform (i.e. announce the entry into the so-called RTM phase) in the coming weeks. The system itself should hit the market next year. It should be the first half of next year, probably in March or April 2021. The first major update for Windows 10 will be released in a similar period, but this time it is not available.

Windows 10X at a glance:

  • Microsoft plans to complete the new system this year
  • It is expected to start in the first half of 2021
  • It will be available exclusively in new facilities
  • It will offer a significantly changed environment, in principle it should not support the launch of classic applications
  • Microsoft is supposed to offer the ability to stream apps (apparently only for businesses), and support for Android apps is not ruled out.

Easy to operate, truncated options

Windows 10X can easily be described as “Windows Lite” as it will be a simplified and significantly changed version of Windows (10).

The goal is to bring the low-cost platform closer to low-cost devices, offering the right level of security while delivering many of the features known from conventional Windows systems.

Of course, we have already heard similar words. When Microsoft introduced Windows RT or Windows 10 S. Both platforms failed for both users and developers. Microsoft will have to make Windows 10X completely different this time around. It is unclear at this time whether he will succeed.

A big step forward? Windows 10 is supposed to support running Android apps

However, a lot has changed since Windows RT and Windows 10 S. For example, the offer of applications in the Microsoft store is significantly richer, in addition, they reported the possible launch of applications for Android directly in Windows.

An important role – in the business environment – can be played by the offer of so-called streaming applications for given devices. A technology called “cloud computing” must be used to stream content.

The basis is of course the internet connection, everything will run in the cloud. Customers should have access to the key applications they need and use in businesses. The “Cloud PC” offer should also include synchronization with Office 365, or. Microsoft 365.

The user environment of the system itself will also be significantly changed, the center of which will be completely changed by the “Start menu” – it will play the role of an application launcher. A similar philosophy was brought about by Chrome OS. It is this Google platform that has a new system with which it can compete directly.

We will not see live tiles and similar “surpluses” here, everything will be subject to the lowest possible hardware requirements. This is one of the reasons why there are reports that the system will be fully optimized for devices with 4 GB of RAM. Devices with higher RAM capacity should come first.

We can also expect various elements that would later need to be redesigned into standard Windows 10 – for example, the use of rounded corners, so to speak, throughout the system.

Microsoft is also expected to work with hardware partners on so-called “universal drivers” optimized for Windows 10X. However, drivers should not change radically in their structure.

Only for new hardware

Like Windows 10 on ARM, as well as Chrome OS or iOS, Windows 10X will not be available separately or for current computers. It will be available exclusively in new facilities. Microsoft will present them together with partners in the spring months of next year. Leading manufacturers such as HP, Lenovo, Dell and Acer are likely to be among them.

These should be, in particular, cheaper devices (laptops) of lower or middle class – again, we strive for direct competition with the Chrome OS system. They should be used in the education sector or in companies. For example, as “thin clients” or “kiosks” for accessing company applications.

The upcoming Windows 10X will also offer built-in applications. The office suite is not missing

If disk images appear, these should be unofficial and not directly supported projects. For example, you can install Chrome OS unofficially.

Windows 10X basically doesn’t support running classic (win32) applications, but – as mentioned above – it can make up for this “flaw” with streaming apps or perhaps Android apps (a similar option was added by Chrome OS and it certainly helped).

The basis will be the offer of applications from the Store or the launch of web-based programs.
