Future of privacy: What happens to VPNs?

For many years – decades – businesses and consumers have been looking for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to add security to their applications on networks and on the Internet. But the appearance of the cloud, including multiple clouds and hybrid cloud arrangements, changes all of this.

A recent survey on information technology operators in Futur, regarding their view of network application trends, reveals the need for a new ASN, which includes integrated security and cloud connectivity. These ASNs or AppWANs could connect and protect cloud applications without the need for specific hardware configurations of VPN servers.

Cloud Shift

Because applications migrate from local applications to hybrid computing environments, they are challenging for IT and network managers who want to connect effectively and securely to applications.

Futuriom has researched 200 IT application development managers, networking, security, and DevOps to find out what these primary challenges seem and how they can be solved.

One of the main findings of the survey is that VPN is not visible as a networking solution for clouds. VPNs have significant security and performance disadvantages for use in cloud cloud applications, with 63.5% of surveyed users reporting VPN performance problems and 47.5% with security claims.

In addition, 75% of VPN users said they were looking for a better solution for cloud networks. They also do not see private lines or MPLS as fully secure networking solutions for cloud applications. Most use an additional security cover.

What are the exact issues with VPNs for cloud networks? The end-user's comments with Futuriom indicate that VPNs often generate network and / or process additional costs, as users connect to VPN servers. In some cases this may cause significant delays and delays for network resources. In addition, VPNs introduce the complexity of management, as they usually require their own authentication servers.

This primary survey reflects the fact that cloud-based applications and virtualization transfer network needs from devices and windows and to applications based on network solutions. Data shows that IT departments are looking for a way to automate network function directly into applications.

One of the important issues covered by the survey is how IT staff reviews the use of VPNs in cloud computing and how they are likely to develop. The collected data show that while many respondents use VPNs for extranets, B2B networks and the associated supply chain, 75% are looking for a better solution.

What about SD-WAN?

With a trend called the program-defined broadband (SD-WAN), which is heavily adhered to, you think it could serve as a new VPN. Ultimately, SD-WAN can add important security features, including an encrypted cover over the network.

But our research findings show that users of the company do not see SD-WAN as a solution to all the security challenges of the network. For example, SD-WAN may be suitable for linking branches, but they do not always support applications over the network, including IOT devices.

A large number of IT managers who were interviewed did not see the SD-WAN IoT solution, with 43.5% of users agreeing to the statement. SD-WAN is not the ideal solution for networking IOT industrial devices. 33.5% did not agree with these statements, and 23% said they did not know.

AppWANs in rescue

The answer can be found in new AppWANs and ASNs that can connect IoT devices using techniques such as root-of-trust, and create a "Zero Trust" network. When asked whether the Zero Trust network architecture significantly improved network security, 55.5% agreed that this was true, while only 15% agreed (29.5% said they did not know).

ASNs are powerful because they can create logical networks over the Internet and WAN to connect applications, regardless of whether they are endpoints in the cloud, applications, branch devices, or IoT devices. These AppWAN applications are well-installed to replace old technologies, such as VPN and MPLS, which are linked to certain hardware devices, but are not nearly as adaptive.

Based on the results of the Futuriom research, it is clear that IT managers are looking for a more flexible and safer online networking solution for the cloud. ASNs are likely to need to link distributed applications in SaaS, IaaS and PaaS environments in the future, regardless of whether they are one cloud, a hybrid cloud, and multi-channel environments.
