"VVD wants to end a political role in the decision on asylum"

The VVD wants a member of the asylum cabinet to no longer be able to grant asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal remedies, writes De Telegraaf. According to the newspaper, the government party wants to get rid of these so-called discretionary powers.

MP Azmani in De Telegraaf says that current practice is unjust and causes undue pressure on the shoulders of the State Secretary for Asylum. This is now VVD Mark Harbers. He used his discretion for, among other things, Lili and Howick, Armenian children, who remained in the Netherlands after protests and media attention.

According to Azmani, the last word in these matters should not be in politics. "Can not verify who is trying to influence",he says. Azmani points out that the assessment of asylum decisions is a matter for the judge.

Hundreds of cases in recent years

In September, data from the Ministry of Justice and Security showed that Harbers exercised discretion in 26 cases between October 2017 and September 2018. As a result, there are 59 asylum seekers in the Netherlands who have exhausted all legal remedies. Harburg's predecessor, Klaas Dijkhoff, the current leader of the VVD Party, has allowed 240 people to live in two years.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives discusses the political plans of the Ministry of Justice and Security that address asylum issues.
