GEORGE TOWN: Penang will only conduct cloud sowing when the water level of the Lake Itamar drops below 40%, says Chong Kon Yeow, Chief Minister.
Chow said that Dam Itam Air has enough water to meet the needs of the Air Itam, the Paya Terubong Valley and the surrounding areas for a further 48 days.
"From Friday, the barrier capacity was 49.1%, and after yesterday's rain, the level increased to 50.1%. We will only require cloud sowing if the effective capacity of the Lake Itam Lake drops below 40%, "he told reporters after visiting Lake Itam Lake with the CEO of Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), Datuk Jaseni Maidins.
Chow said he would let PBAPP watch out for the situation.
Jaseni said that PBAPP will inform the country that he will apply for sowing clouds from the meteorological department if the water level drops below 40%.
"We have already coordinated with Kedah, because when sitting in the cloud, this does not only affect the clouds in Penang, but also in northern Perak and Langkawi, with some areas receiving rain depending on the wind," he said.
However, Jaseni expressed concern about the low water in Sungai Mudi, as this is the main source of water in Penang.
He added that the water level dropped below the PBAPP warning level by 2 m for 42 consecutive days (from 9 February to 22 March), with last Friday at 1.82 m.
"We will continue to pay attention because PBAPP from this river extracts water down from 14 Kedah treatment plants and four irrigation water," he said.
He also said that Kedah is releasing water in Sungai Muda from Muda and Beris Dams in Kedah to satisfy demand in Kedah and Penang.
He said that at last Friday the capacity of Muda Dam was 49.6%, Beris Dam 73.3%, Teluk Bahang Dam 70.7% and Mengkuang Dam 46.6%. – Bernama
