Ten baby cancer patients brought preventive care after exposure to measles patient – Israel News

Ten children with cancer in children in the Ichilov's hemato-oncology department were exposed to measles by the patient and were called for emergency preventive care, it appeared on Monday.

Children will receive an injection of immunoglobulins on Wednesday.

The child with measles is a cancer patient from Ukraine who came to the meeting department. Physicians observed that they had measles symptoms and the laboratory test confirmed the diagnosis.

Officials at Tel Aviv Hospital said that the child came in short-term with 10 other patients in the department. None of them were hospitalized.

This happens the day after the Ministry of Health decided to restrict hospital visits to people who were not vaccinated against measles and prevented them from accessing sensitive departments, such as those taking care of premature babies, intensive care, and haematological units where patients usually have weakened immune systems.

In recent months, dozens of young children, children and infants born prematurely have been called for preventive treatment after they have come in contact with people with measles in the hospital.

On Monday, officials from the Ministry of Health decided not to shift the age for the first dose of the vaccine from 12 months to 9 months due to the limited efficacy of the vaccine at this age and the need for 12 months to repeat the vaccine for infants previously vaccinated .

However, officials of the Ministry of Health responsible for outbreak areas may still choose to invite babies aged 9 to 11 months for an early vaccine. The decision was made in consultation with representatives of health organizations and the president of the Association of Pediatricians, among other experts.

Currently, the vaccine is recommended for infants aged 6 to 11 months, only before traveling abroad.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Health decided that additional measures are needed to prevent the outbreak and check the possibility for schools to leave all children who have not been vaccinated – which is a complex step from the legal point of view.

Two more pupils in the 12th grade in Golan Heights, Katzrin, were diagnosed with the disease. According to reports on Sunday, these young women attended schools with measles last week. The ministry contacted their parents.

First-year students at Rimonim Ashdod College received other doses of the vaccine after the teacher reported that he had contracted the disease. Later, it turned out that the teacher did not have measles.
Since the beginning of the year, 1,334 measles cases have been reported, including one death, an 18-month-old girl. She was the first person to die of measles in Israel in 15 years.

In Jerusalem, the number of cases has increased, especially in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods. The ministry has decided to extend the immunization program in the city, especially in these more vulnerable areas. Officials say the immunization drive has increased immunity from the last few weeks from just 55 percent to more than 80 percent of the population. However, this is still a lower level of immunization than elsewhere in the country and is lower than the 95% level of immunization required for irreversible resistance, the rate at which the disease ceases to be transmitted.

The ministry extends hours of health clinics and maintains them from 8 A.M. до 8 П.М. and on Fridays of 8 A.M. to noon. In addition, the immunization program on wheels will continue to visit affected neighborhoods and urge residents to vacate.
