County Wexford craftsman, Robert O'Connor recently received an honor when he was commissioned to make a special piece for the president of Ireland Michael D. Higgins.

President Higgins, who was newly elected for the second term, was presented with a rewarding part when he recently attended the European Young Scientist Awards in Dublin.

The demonstration piece titled "Stone Irish" was inspired by the ancient ancient stone walls of Ireland, which can still be seen in many rural areas.

Robert, the owner of the Connor Woodturning Studio in Gorey, said that he was happy with the commission and that he was greatly privileged to be invited to design a sculpture for the president.

"The piece was suitable for Michigan D. Higgins, since he was raised on a farm in Clare County, where the rocks are so dominant. Many hours were meant to create the finished product and we hope that the President will be proud of the importance and craft that was involved, "he said.

Describing the creative process, Robert said: "The piece started as a piece of ash, and the stone wall design was cut into the inner part and on the outer edge of the closure. Then it was burned, ebonized and stained."

"We were happy to see results and we hope that President Higgins will enjoy and appreciate it." The Connor Woodturning Studio is a member of Wexford Craft Trail, a group of more than 20 craft companies in Wexford County, a member of Wexford's Way, which includes a network of over 90 members in five tourist routes: Wexford Craft Trail, Wexford Heritage Trail, Wexford Walking Trail , Wexford Garden and Wexford Cycling trail.
