A study published in the journal Viruses assessed virus levels in several organs of infected mice. A control group of mice received a dose of sterile saline in the nasal passages.
His team found that the level of the virus in the lungs of infected mice peaked three days after infection and then began to decline.
However, on the fifth and sixth days, very high levels of the infectious virus were found in the brains of all affected mice, at which time symptoms of severe disease, including heavy breathing, disorientation, and weakness, became apparent.
The study showed that the level of the virus in the brain is about 1000 times higher than in other parts of the body.
The researcher said the findings could help explain why some Covid-19 patients appear to be on their way to recovery with improved lung function, but only recur quickly and die.
