Up to 60 percent of the human body is composed of water that is mostly contained in cells. The person gets the weight of the water when the fluid accumulates in the tissues, leading to swelling of the body. The body stores additional liquid between the organs and the skin, instead of eliminating it by urinating. But getting water weight is temporary and does not mean that you have gained the actual weight.

Consuming too much salt or carbohydrates
One of the most common causes of water retention is excessive salt consumption. Sodium binds to water and keeps it in the body. A higher sodium intake increases the risk of fluid retention in the body. Similarly, if you consume a lot of carbohydrates, it can affect fluid retention.
Most women get up when it is menstruating. This happens because of fluctuating hormones. Breasts can become tender and you can feel bloated if you bleed. But the best part is that all these things will disappear when your period is over.
Hormonal contraception can sometimes also cause an increase in body weight of the water. Estrogen and progestin in contraceptive pills may cause volume fluctuations.
Cortisol, popularly known as "stress hormone", can sometimes also be a reason to increase body weight of water. The hormone is responsible for maintaining a stable blood sugar level, balancing metabolism and reducing inflammation. An increase in cortisol levels can cause water retention.
Some medicines you are taking may also be culprit. Medicines for high blood pressure, such as calcium channel blockers, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may result in an increase in body weight.
