BMW has revealed the details of the new 330e plug-in hybrid version of its popular 3-Series sedan. The new hybrid sedan includes the latest generation of BMW's eDrive technology, combining a 4-cylinder internal combustion engine and an improved electric drive hybrid drive.
In addition to a multitude of upgrades, BMW managed to increase its electric power only in the new BMW 330e sedan compared to the previous model by 50 percent. It is now possible to cover a distance of up to 37 miles only for a battery.
The plug-in hybrid system consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine of 135 kW / 184 hp combined with an electric motor that produces uninterrupted power of 50 kW / 68 hp and a maximum power of 80 kW / 109 hp. In addition, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced by more than 10 percent compared to their predecessor.
The new 330e includes software that controls the interaction between an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The control of electric drive works to increase efficiency and creates a typical form of driving dynamics associated with the BMW brand.
The engine and electric motor generates system power of 185 kW / 252 hp along with the maximum system torque 310 ft. Lbs. That's why the new BMW 330e sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.0 seconds.
The maximum speed of 330e is 143 km / h.
In the HYBRID mode, the new 330e can reach a speed of 69 km / h only with an electric motor that is faster than 18 miles per hour before the predecessor model. In the ELECTRIC mode, only a speed of up to 87 km / h is possible, all in the production of zero emissions.
Among the most important standard features is the XtraBoost, which temporarily increases the system output of the optional hybrid drive with 185 kW / 252 hp with an additional power of up to 30 kW / 41 hp. The function is available for the first time.
XtraBoost is a standard feature of the 330e model. It provides the vehicle with a high level of dynamic performance that BMW drivers expect from a brand. To activate the system, the car includes what BMW calls the "travel switch" used to activate the "SPORT mode". The XtraBoost electric motor temporarily provides up to 30 kW of additional battery power and 41 additional power from the electric engine of the vehicle.
BMW claims that this system is more suited to drive features available on the standard BMW 3-Series limousine. An extra XtraBoost allows for more intensive acceleration than in a conventional vehicle with comparable engine output.
The XtraBoost function can be used up to the state of charging the high voltage of the battery.
For the first time in the BMW hybrid model, it set the curve of the accelerator so that it offers maximum acceleration with a special shift program adapted for the 8-speed Steptronic transmission.
The electric motor 330e is integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic gearbox to save space. Due to the compact design, BMW says that hybrid transmission is only 15 millimeters longer than the appropriate models for the conventional drives of the new BMW 3 Series.
The hybrid 330e for maintaining battery charge and increasing efficiency includes regenerative braking, where the electric motor assumes the generator function when braking. Electricity produced by regenerative braking also serves to power the vehicle's electrical equipment. This means that the generator or belt drive attached to the combustion engine is no longer needed, which increases the efficiency of the entire system.
BMW engineers designed for the high-voltage battery in the new 330e should be placed under the rear seats while the fuel tank is positioned above the rear axle. This means that the luggage compartment is not compromised to provide a space for the battery. Additional space is obtained by folding rear backrest with a 40: 20: 40 split.
In addition to the standard version of the car, the BMW 330e also comes in the model variants of the Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. The car can be equipped with a spring Adaptive M, which adds variable sport steering and sports braking system M.
For security reasons, the 330e includes a number of security systems, from the Driving Assistant Professional with the lane management and lane management system, including the assistive assistant.
Optional functions for the hybrid 330e include an acoustic pedestrian protection feature. The system uses sensors to show cars or people in front of the vehicle. If they are too close, a warning message is displayed. If the driver does not respond in time, the system will activate emergency braking.
By the time the car starts in the summer of 2019, BMW said that new digital services will be available, making it more attractive and convenient to charge the battery of a battery while driving on the road. Access to the charging station can also be checked using the vehicle's display, allowing drivers to reserve a place before driving directly from the vehicle.
