More than 60 percent of Canadians with personal dementia experience have been reported to be ignored or denied in accordance with Alzheimer's Association B.C.
In order to help combat this, Vernon residents were asked to join in changing this by registering the team at the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's Sunday, May 5 at the Greater Vernon Athletic Park.
The Walk is the Alzheimer Society of the leading foundation of the B.C. Foundation. It provides a meaningful way for Vernonites to celebrate and remember the people in their lives who are affected by dementia, and at the same time take action to raise critical means and awareness in the community.
"There are many misconceptions and fears of dementia. Consequently, people affected by the disease often face the stigma and feel isolated, "said Maribeth Friesen, Regional Director for Northern and Home Regions. "We invite the inhabitants of the area to gather their friends, family and colleagues and create a walk group to demonstrate their commitment to building a society that is dignity-friendly; a place where people affected by dementia are welcome, recognized and involved. "
The funds collected at IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer will help Alzheimer's company B.C. provide support and education programs that directly benefit Vernon residents.
"Teams create such an incredible momentum in the walk. They encourage, motivate and support each other, and this friendship is really inspiring, "said Friesen.
"Together we make memories important."
