The Ministry of the Environment has appointed a rural producer to lead one of the most important conservation units in the country: the Lagoa do Peixe National Park in Rio Grande do Sul. a member of a rural group. Environmentalists have criticized the government's decision.
The information was published in the newspaper "O Estado de S.Paulo". Environment Minister Ricardo Salles responded to the request of federal MP Alceu Moreira, chairman of the parliamentary front of agriculture, dr. fish in Rio Grande do Sul.
Maira Souza, a 25-year-old woman, is one of the largest farmers in the region and has never worked in the environmental field. In her opinion, Maira describes her work on the family farm as the only professional experience.
The park is in the far south of the country, between Lagoa and Peixe and the sea, and has 36,000 hectares. It is one of the most important shelters in Brazil for hundreds of species of migratory birds. During the long trip, many people stop on holidays and eat in wetlands, including endangered species.
The Lagoa do Peixe National Park was created more than 30 years ago and is managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biological Diversity (ICMBio). Farmers with farm holdings say that they have not received any compensation until now. From January to the present day, the pressure of landowners has been increased to reduce the conservation unit.
In an interview for G1, Deputy Alceu Moreira said that the park does not yet have a defined use plan.
"Manufacturers have requested that a correct settlement be necessary for someone from a region that has the confidence to make a proposal or to proceed as a park and to establish a management plan and tourist use to return because the land between them is worthless and they can not sell for this problem, or the decision they want to make in the field of environmental protection, because the management plan allows them to use the land properly. "
We see the change as a result of the visit of Minister of the Environment of Ricardo Salles in the Lagoa do Peixe National Park. In April, Salles went to the conservation unit and listened to local producers. During this visit, Salles even threatened to file an administrative complaint against employees who were not present.
The minister's speech called on the chairman of the body of Adalbert Eberhardt to resign. Even former head of the Fernando Weber fleet ended the exonerado of the situation.
The National Association of Environmental Servers (Ascema) said in a statement that the appointment of a young rural producer violates the principles of impersonalities, morality and transparency in public governance.
Researcher João de Deus Medeiros, the coordinator of the network of NGOs in the Atlantic Forest, says that a change in the park that reduces its area would be catastrophic for biodiversity:
"Non-use of trained personnel – ICMBio even created a training school – and putting a person without such a condition threatens this purpose." If a person is attached to other interests, other than conservation, the apparent risk of maintaining the effectiveness of such a space, as a truly protected space, is threatened. "
JN could not contact the rural producer Mairo Souza or the Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles.
