STEYR. The BMW car maker and thus the largest Steyr engine factory are striving to prepare for the future with more fleet models.

The key is "flexibility in all directions," says Steyr's director Christoph Schröder. During installation, petrol, diesel, rear, front and four-wheel drive must be made on one line using a modular system.

Electric motors continue to be installed exclusively in Dingolfing. However, by machining the enclosures for electric motors in mechanical production in Steyr, the plant also receives at least one leg into this door. The first examples will be presented in March. In 2021, 460,000 units will be processed annually. Investment volume: EUR 58 million.

In the second half of the year, Steyr will start operating a new production line. This will include the latest generation of four- and six-cylinder petrol engines. There will be 260 employees. Investment point: 74 million euros.

Further investment in the development of diesel fuel continues: "We are working on the next generation of diesel engines to be launched in 2020," reports the plant manager. In the development center, new "complex electromotor components" are being built, says Schröder. Cooling Stromer circuits would be developed and tested in Steyr.

With these activities Schröder wants to destroy the impression that the Steyr plant has no future. It also attempts to relativize the deletion of the layer on the only pure gas line: "We are creating the same number of units, but we can do this in a full two-way operation better than in poorly used three shifts."

Highest employment

The reduction in the number of posts thus resulted only in the reduction in the number of temporary workers in the "two-digit range". "It's less than two percent of the workforce." Schröder emphasizes that over the past two years, 750 jobs have been created. With 3610 workers and employees, the basic workforce is on the highest level (plus 4.6 percent). In addition, at the end of 2018, there will be 1035 leasing companies (minus three percent year-on-year).

The engine has been and will remain an important part of the BMW network, it will coordinate Schröder with those who in the long run question the future of the factory and the development center for diesel fuels. "I see the plant in five years with a production volume similar to the present." As in the previous year, about 300 million euros will be invested in this city.

The turnover of the plant in 2018 amounted to EUR 3.6 billion, which is five percent less. Production volume of 1.2 million units was 8 percent lower than in 2017.

As Magna builds the BMW 5 Series and Z4 in Graz, BMW sees itself as the "largest carmaker in Austria". In the year 2018, 64,000 pieces were recorded in Graz. BMW has thus provided more than 10,000 jobs. BMW sales in Austria were worth EUR 6.6 billion, which is six percent less than last year. A sales firm in Salzburg recorded a 10 percent drop in sales to 1.7 billion euros.
