A study by González Lizárraga, "COL-3 inhibits the pathological aggregation of alpha-synuclein and remodes the maturation of amyloid fibers: the possible compound is re-used as a neuroprotective", was carried out at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Medicine (IMMCA) of triple dependence between the National University of Tucumán, CONICET and the Ministry of Health Tucumana under Rosano Chehín.
According to the Secretariat for Science, Art and Technological Innovation, the work also collaborated with the Advanced Microscopy Center (CMA) of the University of Buenos Aires, directed by Lie Pietrasanta.
González Lizarraga found that the COL-3 substance was derived from tetracycline, which was chemically modified to reduce its antibiotic activity. The advantage is that, as there is no antibiotic, it can be used for long-term treatment, such as neurodegenerative diseases, to avoid the formation of bacterial resistance.
A young researcher said that COL-3 would be better than doxycycline in terms of its neuroprotective effect. In recent years, this antibiotic has been studied by Tucuman researchers due to its neuroprotective effects. "We have noticed that it has an anti-inflammatory, anti-aggressive property that leads to the formation of non-toxic species of alpha-synuclein and an advantage over doxycycline, it has the ability to disrupt the added fibers and is toxic to Parkinson's disease -" he said.
On the other hand, SAB won the Second Prize for Ponce Hornos for Luciano Medin, a homeless person. It was for him a study on the interaction of doxycycline in Tau protein that forms less toxic species in Alzheimer's disease. Combining this protein is the main cause of neuronal death in this disease.
Three other researchers from Tucuman participated in the conference: Benjamín Socias, Natalia Ríos Colombo and Fernando Dupuy. We also participated in the involvement of the SAB Management Board through César Ávila, who was elected member.
