Drugs worth R12m were seized at OR Tambo in the past week

Johannesburg – Customs officials seized drugs this week worth a total of about 12 million R in three separate incidents at Oliver Tambo International Airport.

On Wednesday, officials intercepted a male passenger attempting to smuggle over 3 kilograms of heroin and estimated R9.2 m from the country. The passenger stopped and questioned the customs officers when he boarded a flight to Europe.

They asked him to accompany them to a certain area where they asked him to find his bags that were examined and uploaded. In his customs search zone, his bags were scanned and searched for. In the false areas of the bags, the customs team found hidden objects that positively assessed heroin. The police arrested him.

In another incident, the customs officers detained a cargo arriving in Joburg from Lagos on June 13, according to information received from the SAPS criminal intelligence unit.

We have collected four packs containing 4 kg of ephedrine (crystal meth) with a street value of R2.2m. The packages were handed over to members of the SAPS Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks).

The e-mail center at OR Tambo also found an ephedrine shipment of 630 000 R6. A parcel weighing 2.8 kg will also be surrendered to the police for further investigation.
